Tank Rigging Project - Large Food Processing Plant

Tank Rigging Project - All Industrial Services

A large food processing plant was referred to R. Baker & Son to take on the task of rigging all new equipment into an existing 200,000 sq. ft. facility. The majority of equipment consisted of large mixing, blending and heating tanks ranging in size between 5,000 and 35,000 gallons, as well as prefabricated staircases, platforms, ladders, and agitators.

The Baker Team’s first test was managing the logistics of equipment that was purchased, fabricated, and delivered on differing timetables. We utilized our two-acre outdoor storage site as well as our 30,000 sq. ft. indoor warehouse to receive and stage many of the tanks, agitators, platforms, and accessories to allow for sequential delivery as dictated by the project schedule.

Transporting the larger tanks to the facility necessitated nighttime transport due to oversize load permit restrictions. Upon arrival at the job site, 130-ton and 80-ton cranes were used to rig many of the tanks to a vertical position and lower large agitators into the vessels. The agitator shafts, which extended to the bottom of each tank, had pre-welded hubs that only allowed one inch of room through the top flange of the tanks. Confined space permits were required to secure the many sets of agitator blades inside the vessels.

During rigging and installation, building information modeling (BIM) was used to accurately pinpoint tank feet and scaffold connection points. Extreme precision, down to one-eighth of an inch, was required as riggers and millwrights worked together to position and assemble prefabricated platforms, load cells, staircases, railing, and ladders, connecting them to tanks and anchoring them to floors and structural steel. There was no room for error. Baker crews utilized a Magni rotating telescopic handler to rig and maneuver equipment into place. The project is currently proceeding slightly ahead of schedule.
