Rigging Streamlines NJ Hospital Renovation Mobilization

Crane rigging sets construction trailers at NJ hospital renovation site

Getting a new project up and running requires planning, organization, and detailed layout, all of which must be done quickly and efficiently. This was certainly the case when one of our clients, a CM firm, needed to mobilize and set up a camp for a large renovation and addition at a New Jersey hospital. Boots on the ground, as time was of the essence. Our client needed to show their client they could mobilize and get started as quickly as possible, as promised.

We sat down with the current mobilization plan and made a few suggested changes to better facilitate getting material and equipment in and out, drawing from our many decades of experience as professional riggers.

Site Challenges

The area designated for the construction trailers was off to the side of the property in a low-lying area where protective storage and open laydown areas were very difficult to access and had little maneuverability. This required lifting and placing construction trailers and Connex storage boxes directly into place via crane. There was no storage at all inside the facility, and parking lots were very busy and active. Making this all work in a small area was critical. Getting it wrong would mean struggling and relocating things throughout the project, time that was not in the schedule.

Strategic Layout and Execution

This required layout and marking of four large 60-foot ganged office trailers, four individual 50-foot subcontractor trailers, eight Connex storage boxes of different sizes, and a laydown area with bathrooms - all with just enough room for Lulls, forklifts, and Bobcats to maneuver in and out efficiently.

Within a two-day period, all of the trailers and Connex boxes were set in place according to plan. The trailer company was quickly able to join trailers together where needed, set them in place, and add stairs and other accessories. Power, which had been pre-planned and made available, was connected by the electricians in one and a half days. The project's mobilization was complete within a one-week timeframe. The hospital was very impressed with the layout and timely installation.

Additional Critical Services

R. Baker also assisted in rigging and setting two one-megawatt Caterpillar temporary generators alongside the loading dock area, as one of the first orders of business was to remove the two existing outdoor generators to make way for the new hospital addition foundation. This required putting stone down on the grassy area, lifting and placing the generators with belly tanks to their exact location, and helping to support and protect the power cabling.

Warehouse and Logistics Support

Beyond the initial mobilization, our client also contracted R Baker to handle and store large, critical deliveries in our warehouse facility and deliver them to the construction site exactly when needed for installation. This just-in-time delivery approach was crucial for a project where on-site storage space was virtually non-existent.

The major components we managed included an electrical substation, several custom air handlers, two large York chillers, along with specialized flooring materials and doors. Each of these items required careful handling, climate-controlled storage, and precise delivery timing to coordinate with the construction schedule. Our warehouse team worked closely with the project managers to ensure that materials arrived exactly when installation crews were ready, preventing costly delays and eliminating the need for on-site storage in the cramped hospital environment.

Project Success and Client Impact

The comprehensive mobilization services and reliable on-time deliveries took a significant operational load off our client, allowing their project management team to focus their attention and resources on other critical areas of this very challenging and complex construction project.

By handling the logistics, storage, and precision placement of equipment and materials, R Baker enabled the CM firm to demonstrate their capabilities to the hospital client while maintaining the aggressive timeline that was essential to the project's success. The seamless execution of the mobilization phase set a positive tone for the entire renovation and addition project.
